Silas Coggeshall of Quincy, IL will open his exhibition entitled Sound & Deconstruction in the Quincy Art Center's satellite location at the Broadway Hy-Vee Market Café and Bar. The public is encouraged to stop by throughout the evening and meet the artist!

Coggeshall learned about art through books and the internet, but didn’t take an art class until his first semester at John Wood Community College. He decided to pursue art and is currently working toward his bachelors of fine art, with a focus in painting at Western Illinois University in Macomb, IL.

His Sound & Deconstruction exhibition explores abstraction and tests how far he can deviate from a source photo or an idea. In his Intaglio prints, he moves away from representing a physical object, focusing solely on design. The concept of sound is ever present when Coggeshall chooses his line thickness and color. Instead of relying on recognizable images, he explores ideas, emotions, and sound through abstraction.

Coggeshall draws inspiration from his classes and artists such as Francis Bacon, Jeremy Mann, & Basquiat. After graduating, he plans on furthering his education and pursuing a masters of fine art degree. He has exhibited in the Illinois Community College Juried Exhibition, the John Wood Student Show and the Year of Mercy Juried Exhibition at the Quincy Art Center. Coggeshall’s paintings and drawings will be on view through July 10, 2018.

Generous support has been provided by the Art Center Members, Quincy Herald Whig, and in part through the Illinois Arts Council, an agency of the State. For additional information please call (217) 223-5900 or e-mail staff at [email protected].
